SINK OR FLOAT In the first of our watery STEM sessions, we will explore why things float, how we can change how they float and what materials will float on other materials. Find out if similar objects float in the same way, or how you can make a floating object from sinking materials! Take part in the sink and float experiment and then test your design skills as you attempt to make a sea-worthy cargo ship! Suitable for children from 7-11 years.  Children may be accompanied or may be left. BOOK YOUR SPACE   ABOUT OUR HOME EDUCATOR SESSIONS. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic.  Overall, topics ranges from ‘Plane Sailing’ (Can it fly? Why does it fly? If it can fly – how far can it fly? – an engineering journey) to ‘It’s Raining STEM’ (Discover how we can predict rainfall, and why we might need to know when and how much rain is going to fall), and lots in between.  We will also have some free exploration time on a set of COVID-safe exhibits. The programme will begin from week commencing on Friday 21st May, starting at 2.30pm and will run for 1 hour and 45 minutes.  The programme will consist of 8 “standard” sessions and  a final ‘STEM Party’ session to celebrate the end of this term. Discounted Block Booking The sessions cost £15 on an individual basis or a block booking for all nine sessions is £120/child, offering a significant discount. These would be fully refundable, should we be required to close down again due to the on-going COVID pandemic. BLOCK BOOK COVID protocols Our COVID-safe protocols are driven by government requirements and include face covering, hand sanitation, socially distanced tables for one “bubble” only, thorough cleaning between groups visiting the Centre, ventilation and workplace testing for staff.

HELPFUL HEARING Everyday of our lives we are bombarded by a huge number of different sounds, friends laughing, birds singing and even the bleep of a text message. But what is sound? And how do we hear and interpret different sounds? We’ll answer these questions, and also show how you can trick your brain with sound. Explore sound and hearing in this interactive session. FOSSILS Fossils are really very rare and it takes a special kind of creature, dying in a very specific place, with just the right conditions to create the perfect fossil. Come and explore the process and what it takes to make a fossil, or even what it might take to become one yourself! Excavate an ice fossil and make your own fossil (without waiting millions of years!) BOOK YOUR SPACE ABOUT OUR HOME EDUCATOR SESSIONS. TASTE-TASTIC We all know what we like and dislike to eat – but have you ever thought about why you like or dislike something? This session is full of delicious, and maybe not so delicious, tastes and flavours to try. We’ll compare our own taste likes and dislikes and also uncover how different foods taste to different animals. Discover if you are a super-taster, trick your taste buds and mix a fruity cocktail to your own taste. BOOK YOUR SESSION   ABOUT OUR HOME EDUCATOR SESSIONS. PLANE SAILING Can it fly? Why does it fly? If it can fly – how far can it fly? And how much weight can it carry? Engineers often create small-size models to test a product’s design. Model testing tells engineers how a design might perform in a real-world situation. The engineer can experiment with different shapes and materials to produce the perfect design for the task. In this creative engineering session you will design and make your own paper planes (or gliders!) and then see how they perform in a series of challenges. All you need to fly high in this session is a bit of flight knowledge, plenty of perfect folding and fantastic flinging! BOOK YOUR SPACE ABOUT OUR HOME EDUCATOR SESSIONS. IT’S RAINING STEM In this session we take inspiration from precipitation. Discover how we can predict rainfall, and why we might need to know when and how much rain is going to fall. We discover what it ‘rains’ on other planets and then come back down to earth with a splash to find the best materials to keep Bertie bath bomb dry. No matter what the weather, we will hopefully stay dry while finding out what rain is, why we need it and how we can protect ourselves from getting soaked! BUBBLE BURST We’ve all heard a lot about bubbles this past year – but, in this session, we are talking about beautiful, soapy bubbles of all sizes. You will take a close look at the science of these fascinating, fragile spheres. Join in with some surprising demonstrations and play with bouncing bubbles. Unleash your creative (and competitive) side to create the frothiest, longest lasting, or biggest bubble of the day! BOOK YOUR SPACE ABOUT OUR HOME EDUCATOR SESSIONS.
