Home Education Sessions – Explore – SPLAT This series of STEM Club sessions is designed to spark curiosity and promote exploration of everyday phenomenon such as fire and light. We will investigate the scientific answers to seemingly simple questions like why do balloons pop and what makes lemonade fizz? SPLAT A super-messy session of spectacular splats. Investigate momentum, mass and splat patterns, make lots of different splats and explore their size and shape and see if you can predict the best conditions for the biggest splat. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic. We will also have some free exploration time. Home Education Sessions – Explore – SHINE This series of STEM Club sessions is designed to spark curiosity and promote exploration of everyday phenomenon such as fire and light. We will investigate the scientific answers to seemingly simple questions like why do balloons pop and what makes lemonade fizz? SHINE It’s all about light in this glittering session. Investigate light absorption, transmission, reflection and refraction. We’ll find out how light travels and how we can use reflective objects to bounce and direct light. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic. We will also have some free exploration time. Home Education Sessions – Explore – BURN This series of STEM Club sessions is designed to spark curiosity and promote exploration of everyday phenomenon such as fire and light. We take a look at the science behind some famous fires, explore some burning questions and finish with some fabulous, fiery demonstrations. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic. We will also have some free exploration time. Home Education Sessions – Food Glorious Food – Chocolate Welding This series of Home Educator sessions is all about using things we eat to demonstrate some STEM ideas. From construction to genetics, to renewable energy. How can food, glorious, food help us to learn science. CHOCOLATE WELDING How strong is chocolate when it’s used as a building material? How much weight can a chocolate bar carry? What happens when you combine more than one chocolate bar? Does the shape affect the strength of the bridge? Discover the answers to these questions and more when we construct with chocolate. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. From construction to genetics, to renewable energy. How can food, glorious, food help us to learn science. MARSHMALLOW CONSTRUCTION Engineers have been constructing tall buildings for thousands of years. Often creating structures that are awesome or beautiful. In this session we will explore construction techniques and experiment with different geometric shapes in construction, comparing their effectiveness in stabilising our very own skyscraper made from spaghetti! This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. From construction to genetics, to renewable energy. How can food, glorious, food help us to learn science. STRAWBERRY DNA Can you crack the code and get some DNA from a strawberry? We’ll find out what DNA is made of, and where DNA is found in our body. We’ll explore the structure of DNA and then use our knowledge to track animals in the wild. CABBAGE INDICATOR Use household materials to make and test your own indicator for acids and bases. Discover what it means if a material is acidic or basic and see if you can predict the reaction with an indicator. ELECTRICITY FROM FOOD What is biomass and how can we use this renewable resource to generate energy. We will find out about alternative energy sources, and then generate some electricity from a variety of unusual sources. From construction to genetics, to renewable energy. How can food, glorious, food help us to learn science. ICE CREAM SCIENCE What’s better than a bowl of ice cream? How about a bowl of ice cream that you have made yourself, discovering the science behind cooling and freezing in the process? Then add some ice cream toppings – but only after you’ve found out about the science behind the ingredients. Home Education Sessions – Outdoor Fun – Boats This series of Home Educator sessions is all about having fun outside.  How can being outside help us to learn science? BOATS Can you model a floating boat? Or one that will carry cargo? Experiment with different designs to see if your boat will stay afloat. Make and test some moving boats, using some unusual methods of propulsion. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities.
