Events at Cambridge Science Centre

It’s all about SPACE at Cambridge Science Centre! No need to book! Today’s shows: 11.00am Team:Space Ever wondered what life is like for the entire space crew of scientists, engineers, trainers and astronauts? From launching rockets, docking at the International Space Station and tackling emergency challenges, this special show offers fantastic insight and learnings into what it takes to undertake a space mission. 2.30pm Safe in Space Take a closer look at the challenges of space and what we can do to keep “ourselves” safe. Make something a little different with our activities today! 12.30pm  Design a planet Find out why Mars is red and Neptune is blue. Have a go at creating your own colourful planet and its surrounding solar system using chromatography. 4.00pm  Pin Wheel Galaxy Explore space and look beyond the Milky Way – our own galaxy – to find out a little bit about the different types of galaxies. We’ll take a closer look at one in particular – called the pinwheel galaxy and make a model of it to take home.

This series of Home Educator sessions is all about having fun outside.  How can being outside help us to learn science? LIVING THINGS Find out what defines living things and how we can identify living and non-living things. Learn to classify some bee species and take part in our own nature survey. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic. We will also have some free exploration time. BOOK YOUR PLACE

Man has grouped these stars into patterns call constellations. Make a viewer to help you identify the constellations more easily. 4.00pm Rocket Mouse

This series of Home Educator sessions is all about having fun outside.  How can being outside help us to learn science? SPORTS SCIENCE We take a scientific look at how we move. Learn how your muscles work, and test your agility, speed, stamina and coordination with some fun sports day events. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and each week will be based on a different curriculum topic. We will also have some free exploration time. BOOK YOUR PLACE

Our Living World Exhibition is new and is now open! Explore life from the basic building blocks to endangered species in our hands on exhibits, interactive shows and fun  activities. Can you “build” your own plant, get plankton to float at just the right level in the “ocean”, and can you find your place in the Tree of Life? No need to book Today’s shows: 11.00am Balance of Biodiversity Let’s investigate the enormous variety of life on the earth – biodiversity, looking at the interactions between different species via food chains and webs.  we’ll look at the important roles of ecosystem superheroes and what we can do to support them. 2.30pm  Leaves and Seeds Find out how and why leaves change colour in Autumn, and discover some of the ways the plants spread their seeds in this interactive show. Make something a little different with our activities today! 12.30pm  Plants and Pollinators Find out how plants and their pollinators – often bees – work together to help the plants grow and reproduce. 4.00pm  Fabulous Fungi Bold and vibrant fungi are found in nearly every garden, but what we witness above ground are just the beautiful fruiting buds. However, what about their hidden underground network of hyphae? Find out how fungi are responsible for playing a huge part in our ecosystems, and are one of the unsung heroes of the natural world.

And how come we all look a bit the same – but different? Look into his famous voyage on The Beagle and how that helped him formulate his theory of evolution. Packed full of fun games and demos, this show gives you a chance to be a part of a 5 billion year old story! Find out how and learn a bit more about this special molecule.

Women in Science  This series of Home Educator sessions is all about some less well-known women who have made big contributions in science, technology, engineering and maths. We will find out about these pioneering women, discover what they achieved and explore  some of the things they investigated. Through the series we will build a ‘Top Trumps’ deck of fabulous female scientists, and carry out some fun experiments based on their work. Violent Volcanoes Geology, rocks and eruptions – all in a day’s work for Katia Krafft and others who studied the violent side to our planet. This session forms part of our special programme, just for home educated young learners, with weekly sessions of hands-on activities.
