“Volunteering has been great fun. You don’t need to be an expert in the field to help out. The staff are very helpful at prepping volunteers and you pick up lots of science”
Joseph McLeish

Volunteer with us

Volunteers play a really important role here at Cambridge Science Centre and help us hugely expand our capacity to bring science to young people – many of whom would not normally have access to science in this way.

What volunteering opportunities could you get involved with?

We offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities and ways to get involved with what we do at Cambridge Science Centre. These are just some of the ways you can start bringing STEM to young people:

We open our gallery/centre to the general public for fun, interactive sessions on a wide range of STEM topics. As part of our team of volunteer communicators you could play an important role in supporting our work, by helping the public to engage with our exhibits and by providing a friendly, personal experience for our visitors.

Short Videos and VirtualSchoolTrip:

With opportunities in both content creation and editing, you can get involved in helping us create short videos for our social media or YouTube channel, or help us produce our VirtualSchoolTrip videos, which provide schools with a virtual “Trip-to-the-Centre” experience.

Every fortnight we release an issue of our magazine OpenUpScience. This magazine is packed full of exciting and inspiring STEM activities for children to do at home and is distributed out through our community partners. You could get involved with content creation or assist us in distributing the magazine.

Delivery Product Development:

Do you have any ideas for new activities, shows or workshops? You can get involved with creating and developing new delivery products for use in our gallery or on school outreach.

Plus more to explore..

Working alongside our Head of Marketing, you can help to manage our social media accounts and plan for events.

Working with our Head of Development to help research and prepare for grant applications, or investigate new opportunities for collaborations.

Delivery shifts will be available on weekends and during school holidays. The centre will be open for the public from 10:30-5, and there will be volunteering sessions available in the morning or afternoon.
There is an easy to use sign-up system which you will access when you become a volunteer, and here you will be able to clearly see what days are available for volunteering shifts.

The time frame of our development opportunities will be on a project-by-project basis, and this will be decided on prior to project commencement.

*Available volunteering opportunities will be dependent on what COVID-19 regulations allow. We have designed some of these opportunities to allow for remote working, meaning we can still offer a range of volunteering options even with any covid restrictions*

Enthusiastic volunteers work alongside our Science Communicators to allow our visitors to engage with STEM topics, and provide a fun, personal experience. Through both in-person delivery and by helping us develop fun and exciting new products, you can help inspire the next generation of scientists and inventors by volunteering with us today. It’s great fun – and who knows, you could spark the imagination and inspire the next generation of scientists!

What do I need?

Volunteers from all backgrounds and with all levels of experience are very welcome – we just need you to be friendly, helpful and interested in communicating science to young people. We do just ask that volunteers are 16 or over.

There may be some volunteering opportunities that will require certain previous experience (which will be made clear) but there will be plenty of opportunities to suit all volunteers.

What you will gain

  • Development of skills and experience that will enhance your CV
  • Be part of a motivated and enthusiastic team
  • Meet new people in your local community
  • The satisfaction of giving back
  • The knowledge you have played a part in bringing STEM to young people
